Jabra HALO 2 Bluetooth Sports HeadsetThe Jabra HALO 2 Bluetooth Stereo Headset has become so popular lately it’s hard to find them in stock.  In fact, sports headphones in the form of headbands or sportsbands (as Jaybird calls them) are setting new trends in the sports market. More and more runners, especially those that want a Bluetooth headset for more than just running, and preferring these over the traditional sports earbuds.

Pros

Connect to 2 Devices Simultaneously.  This is one feature we’re seeing more and more of because users want the ability to walk in the door from the gym and still use their headphones with another device, like their computer, without having to pair up to it all over again.

Easy to Carry.  This is the first headset we’ve seen that has a collapsible headband.  Definitely a pretty cool feature if you’re looking to toss these in your gym bag or even take them on the plane.

Not Noise Isolating or Noise Cancelling.  We actually thing this is a major plus.  All too often we find runners using noise cancelling headphones, which is a major safety concern.  While noise isolating headphones can be a bit of an improvement, using on-ear headphones is actually your safest bet.

Cons

Durability.  We haven’t actually experienced any problems with the durability or talked to anyone that has, but typically anything with “moving parts” has an increased risk to get damaged.  So, while we love the collapsible option, the hinge is definitely a weak point in the design.  As long as you’re not rough on your headphones then it’s unlikely you’ll ever see a problem.

The Jabra HALO 2 Bluetooth Headset is the newest in the increasing line of sports headsets we’ve seen over the last couple years.  One of the major reasons people love the headband style as opposed to the new in-ear or in-ear canal headphones is that they are light on their ears.  The Jabra HALO 2 is exceptionally light, as they include a velvet like covering on the ear phone that is extremely comfortable.

Jabra HALO 2 Wireless Sports Headset

Unfortunately, as with any headband, they are limiting.  They won’t be ideal for the gym if you’re doing a lot of situps or using a lot of benches, as the headphones could slip a little bit or even fall off.  In addition, cyclists aren’t likely to use these unless they want to without a helmet.  The Jabra HALO 2 is more for the casual exerciser or runner who wants to use these as both workout headphones and for other things, like listening to movies on their laptop.

The end result is they sound great, the Bluetooth connectivity is good, and they’re extremely comfortable.  You really can’t go wrong with these, just make sure you define what you want to use them for before buying.

GOgroove Airband Wireless Bluetooth Sports HeadsetGOgroove’s first wireless Bluetooth stereo headset, the Airband, has been quite impressive, much like the GOgroove AudioActive, their neckband Bluetooth stereo headset.  The headband or sportsband style headsets are still relatively new to the sport headphones market, but are becoming very popular, especially among runners.

Pros

Comfort.  Most sports headphones utilize an in-ear or in-ear canal earbud, while the Airband uses padded on-ear earphones.

Say Goodbye to Wires.  The only time you’ll use wires with this headset is when charging.

Talk on the Run.  The Airband supports hands free calling and has a built in function to pause your music to accept calls.

Cons

Not Ideal for the Gym.  A lot of times in the gym you may be doing situps, pushups, or planks.  Basically any movement that puts the headset in a horizontal position has a chance of causing it to slip.  While this doesn’t happen often, it is something to think about.

Ever since the Jaybird SB1B Sportsband Headset was released sport headsets have become increasingly popular.  Truth be told we can’t blame people for loving them, as we haven’t come across one that we don’t love.  What’s not to love?

The sound is great.

The vertical style headphones using a soft on ear headphone are so refreshing in a market dominated by in ear headphones, not to mention the secure fit that comes with this style of headphone is usually more than enough for most active listeners.

The buttons are actually large enough to press, so you’re not fiddling around with trying to figure out how to skip a song.

GOgroove Airband ControlsOn top of all that we love the style.  The GOgroove Airband has a very symmetrical and sleek look which lends them to being used in more than just a workout or training environment.

Overall this is a great sports headset that you really can’t go wrong with.  Our only caution is to someone who may be doing a lot of repetitive horizontal motions, like situps, as you may have to adjust the headset several times during the workout.

Jaybird SB2MB SportsbandJaybird is still relatively new to the scene of workout headphones, but they have done a great job of establishing themselves with their Jaybird Sportsband Headphones.

Pros

Style.  Plenty of colors to choose from.

On Touch Controls.  Controls for music and receiving calls are easier to use than most headphones because of the larger surface area on the headset.

Lifetime Sweat Warranty.  This is one feature that Jaybird has built its workout headphones on.  All Jaybird Sportsbands come with a lifetime warranty against any damage caused by sweat.

USA Triathlon Partner.  With its new partnership with USA Triathlon Jaybird has even more obligation to live up to its word as the “world’s greatest sports headphones.”

Comfort and Fit.  Rotating earpads and adjustable headband allow for a perfect fit.

Cons

Loose Fit when Horizontal.  This is kind of a weird con, but there have been complaints of the fit during activities that require the headphones to become horizontal.  For example, during activities such as situps.

Bulky.  While Jaybird does a great job of making these extremely lightweight – they hardly weigh more than earbuds – they’re still a bit larger than most workout headphones.  This didn’t create any problems during the workout, but you can’t roll them up and toss them in your gym bag like a lot of other sports headphones.

Sports headphones in general have usually taken a back seat to style…until now.  Jaybird doesn’t only place an emphasis on creating some the best Bluetooth sports headsets, but they also make them look good.  As the world begins to adapt and make a large push towards Bluetooth its important to have a pair of headphones that can double as sports headphones and headphones you can wear around while still looking good, and the Jaybird Sportsband does just that.

If you sweat a lot and are concerned about damaging your headphones, then this might be your top choice due to the fact that there is a lifetime warranty against sweat damage.  You heard us right, lifetime.

While we found that these headphones are great for just about any workout, they reign superior for runners.

Specifications

  • Bluetooth Range: 33 feet
  • Batter Power: 8 – 11 hours of music/talk time
  • Controls: play, pause, track, volume, answer/end call
  • Weight: 3.7 ounces
  • Warranty: lifetime against sweat, 1 year limited otherwise

What’s in the Box

  • Jaybird SB2M Sports Headset
  • USB cable
  • Spare earpads

Jaybird Sportsband Workout HeadphonesThe JayBird SB1B Sportsband Bluetooth Headphones are one of the first sportsbands on the market.  Most of the vertical headphones of the past sported a thin headband with larger earphones.  Jaybird took a different approach which makes this Bluetooth headset perfect for the serious or casual athlete.

Pros

  • Modern, sleek look
  • Lightweight
  • Jaybird boasts the ability to “run in the rain” and you can do just that without problems
  • Sweatproof

Cons

  • Uncomfortable to wear with helmets (i.e. biking helmet)
  • Storage case is not a carrying case, but it is extremely nice to sit on your shelf

Full Review

Say goodbye to wires and say hello to Jaybird.   It was difficult to find much to complain about the Jaybird SB1B Sportsband because they just look so incredible.  They function extremely well as far as Bluetooth connectivity and found you could have your receiving device (i.e. iPhone) around 20 feet away and still hear the music with no problems.

One of the major qualities that Jaybird promotes is their sweatproof aspect of the sportsband.  The SB1B stands up to this test with no difficulty.  Regardless of how much you sweat you’re not going to have a problem with these workout headphones.

Sound Quality

Good sports headphones must sound great.  Why?  Because music is our driving force in a lot of our workouts.  The Jaybird Sportsband will not let you down in this department.

Comfort and Fit

The fit is very solid, and with the adjustable sportsband they won’t be flopping around on your head.  In addition, the ability to rotate the earpads adds another level of comfort that most headphones don’t offer.

ony-mdr-w08lDon’t let the price of the Sony Ultra Lightweight MDR-W08L Vertical In-The-Ear Headphones fool you.  They may be the single best workout headphones dollar for dollar.  They may not sound as good as the Bose IE2 or look as good as the Monster iSport, but coming in at under $10 they put up a good fight.

Pros

Sound Quality.  The Sony MDR-W08L utilize the Sony Acoustic Turbo Circuit which allows more balanced frequency reproduction and higher input level headroom from portable players.  What exactly does that mean?  Basically, they are designed to sound good on your mp3, iPhone, iPod, CD player, etc.

Comfort and Fit.  One of the biggest praises the Sony Ultra Lightweight headphones receive is comfort.  For many runners these are the only headphones they can run with.   The vertical design takes any added weight from the cords off your ears making the headphones feel almost invisible.

Price.  It’s going to be hard to beat a pair of top rated headphones that you can usually find for less than $10. (Update: It’s almost impossible to find these headphones, and is unlikely you will ever find them for under $100)

Cons

Outdated.  While the Sony Ultra Lightweight headphones still continue to be a top seller after almost 10 years the technology is getting to be a little out of date.  Though we know runners that grab a couple pairs every year just to make sure they’ll always have them.

sony ultra lightweight mdr-108l verticle in the ear headphones

The word ultra should really be emphasized when talking about the Sony Ultra Lightweight headphones because they are unbelievably light, especially for a pair of vertical headphones.  With every runner or gym rat sporting a brand new iPod or iPhone it is very rare to see vertical headphones these days, but they’re still relevant in the workout headphones world.

There’s not really a whole lot to say about these headphones.  They’re one of those headphones that you’ll find people may stock up on 10-20 pairs just to be sure they always have a pair to go when their old ones burn out.

Specifications

  • Nickel plated plug to resist corrosion
  • Warranty : 1 year

What’s in the Box

With the price being so incredibly low, you’re not getting the usual protective storage case or any other fancy accessories.  But you will get these amazing sports headphones.

  • Sony Ultra Lightweight MDR-Wo8L Headphones

Where to Buy

As odd as it sounds, you CAN NOT find these headphones in stores.  However, Amazon still carries them (and has for the past 12 years!).
