iLuv IEP416 Red Sports EarphonesiLuv isn’t new to the world of headphones, but they have just recently been making a push towards creating a new sports line.  We recently gave you a preview of the iLuv IEP416 FitActive Sports Earphones at CES 2012 and we finally got around to reviewing them.

Pros

Unique In-Ear Fin.  If you dislike earbuds pushed inside your ear canal then you might just Luv (pun intended) these earphones.  iLuv designed what they call an “in-ear brace” to help maintain a secure fit.

Speak EZ Remote.   Built in remote including voice control microphone and capability to answer calls if using a smartphone.

Multiple Color Options.  The FitActive look very similar to typical Apple earbuds except they come in variety of colors that just so happen to match any color of iPod!

Cons

Cheaply Built.  It’s hard to list this as a con since the cost is less than $20, but they don’t exactly utilize the most high quality grade material.  For some people that go through workout earbuds like candy then this is great, but others may frown a little.

Microphone Sound Quality.  The in-line microphone did work for receiving phone calls, but the sound quality could definitely use some improvement.

Full Review

When we first saw the iLuv FitActive headphones we weren’t that impressed.  Mainly because they appeared to just be similar to Apple earbuds that came in different colors with a new name slapped on them.  After testing them we have to admit that we were wrong.

iLuv iEP415 FitActive Heapdhones

The “in-ear brace” that we typically refer to as an in-ear fin actually does work quite well and was unbelievably comfortable.  Instead of extending into the ear canal like Yurbuds, it stops just short.  The only drawback here is on sound quality.

If you’re looking for a lightweight, affordable pair of earbuds then definitely check out the FitActive.  They won’t stand up to some of the higher priced workout headphones, but they’ll definitely get the job done.

Specifications

  • Compatible with most MP3 players and smart phones
  • In-line microphone
  • In-ear brace

creative-wp-250We always get excited to try out a new pair of Bluetooth headphones, especially when they are tailored for sports.  The WP-250 by Creative are just that.  So, how did they turn out?  Check out our review below.

Pros

Slim and Comfortable.  The lightweight neckband (similar to the Motorola SF 600) keeps this headset slim.

Price.  These are among some of the cheaper Bluetooth headphones made for sports.

Easy to Use Controls. The WP-250 is one of the first headsets we’ve seen make good use of a jog wheel for track skipping, making changing songs extremely quick and easy.

Cons

Lack of Clarity in High Sounds. While Creative does a good job emphasizing bass (which we liked for working out), they didn’t do a great job in the mid to high range sounds.

buy-button-325x54

Full Review

It’s easy to tell these headphones were designed with the active listener in mind. Creative utilizes an angled earbud extension that fits snugly in your ear canal and you shouldn’t have any problems with maintaining a secure fit.  Though keep in mind it is a one size fits all neckband.  As funny as it may sound people with larger heads may find a secure fit harder to maintain.

All the controls are on the right earphone and include: volume, track skipping (jog wheel), and a button to receive incoming calls.

If you read the product description at Creative they tout their “invisible mic” feature, but every pair of Bluetooth headphones we’ve tested has an “invisible mic”, so we didn’t really understand what they were getting at.  Though we did manage some in call testing and clarity was above average.

Bluetooth connectivity was above average as well.  Some devices won’t work well unless you have them in clear line of sight of the transmitter, but these seemed to do just fine whether the MP3 player was in our pocket or strapped to our arm.

Overall we liked the WP-250. They didn’t blow us away, but we didn’t have a lot of problems or much to complain about which can be rare in the headphones world.  The only question is, are you better off going with something like the Plantronics Backbeat 903 or Motorola SF 600?  That will have to be your call.

Specifications

  •  Bluetooth equipped (up to 33 feet)
  • In-ear canal
  • Flexi-memory neckband
  • Charging time: 2 hours
  • Play time: 8 hours
  • Talk time: 9 hours
  • Weight: 1.1 ounces

What’s in the Box

  • WP-250 Bluetooth Headset
  • (3) silicone eartips (S/M/L)
  • (1) charging cable (approximately 40 inches long)

earHerosport Headphones

The earHerosport headphones are designed by Audiologists who know a lot about how our hearing works. They designed headphones that allow you to hear your music and/or cellphone conversation while still hearing the world around you, which many studies have shown just how important environmental awareness can be.

Pros

Improved Safety. If you’re a runner, biker, skier, or just wear your headphones while crossing the street, you may not realize how dangerous conventional headphones can be. They block out outside noises such as traffic and can make your daily workout a hazard. With the earHerosport headphones, the ear canal is left open enough for you to still hear your surroundings and stay completely aware of your environment.

Improved Comfort. Because the earphone portion of the headphones is so small, they are comfortable for long hours of wear and allow your ears to continue to breathe.

Invisibility. The flesh-tone narrow cord makes these headphones nearly invisible in your ears.

Cons

Musical quality. Because you are still hearing the noises in your environment, it may be a distraction from the music you are trying to listen to. You must determine whether you are willing to take the risk of environmental hazards versus better sound quality.

Full Review

earHerosport EarphonesWhile the popular headphones of today are based on noise isolation and blocking out the outside world, they may not be the best choice for working out in the real world. Noise isolating headphones can be a huge hazard when running, cycling, skiing, or even just crossing the street. They will prevent you from hearing oncoming traffic, which can lead to a tragic accident.

With the earHerosport headphones, you are able to enjoy your favorite tunes to keep you pumped during your workout, while also allowing you to hear the environment around you. This leads to improved safety while wearing headphones for working out.

The tiny speakers in each ear allow for the ear canals to remain open so that outside sounds can still be heard. It is also good for improved comfort and a nearly invisible design.

earHero Sport Headphones

Quote from a fellow Audiologist: “earHero headphones are a great alternative for athletes concerned about safety when working out and may help to reduce the amount of hearing loss conventional headphones can cause.”

Specifications

  • Two tiny speakers in each ear canal for binaural listening while still hearing outside noise
  • Retention cord attached to each speaker located inside the bowl of the ear canal
  • 3.5mm jack

What’s in the Box

  • earHero Headphones
  • Carrying case

MEElectronics Sport-Fi S6 HeadphonesAccording to MEElectronics their new Sport-Fi S6 Headphones are the complete workout package.  As you’ll notice from the pictures below we spent a lot of time testing these new sport headphones through several intense workouts on the tennis court.  The question is, how do they stack up?

Pros

Super Secure Fit.  We absolutely love the fit for these earbuds.  Never even came close to falling out.

Perfect Cord Lengths.  MEElectronics supplies 2 different cord lengths, 1 for an armband and 1 for a waistband.

Lightweight.  You won’t even notice they’re their after a couple minutes.

Ultimate Sports Kit.  You won’t need to go out and purchase anything else, as it comes with a carrying case, multiple ear tips, sport clip, armband and more!

Cons

Poor Armband Design.  We were really hopeful for a nice armband since this is one of the few sports headphones that comes with one.  Unfortunately the armband doesn’t allow for ease in changing songs, especially if you are using an iPhone.

buy-button-325x54

Full Review

When we first heard MEElectronics was coming out with a new pair of earbuds targeted for working out we got excited.  They’re known for packing a ton of value with an affordable price, and we were also a fan of their M6 Headphones, which are very similar to the S6.

MEElectronics Sport-Fi S6 Armband

So, how did the Spor-Fi S6 sound?  Out of the box they sounded average, nothing great, nothing bad.  After about 20-25 hours of burn in they started to sound a lot better.  The HIs are very sharp and crystal clear and the MIDs and LOWs are very smooth.  We were hoping for a bit more bass, but overall we didn’t have any real complaints about the sound quality.

We mentioned above the the S6 have a great fit, but it took a little time to find out what works best.  They come with 6 sets of ear tips:

  • (2) tree tops (S/L)
  • (1) cylinder
  • (3) round buds (S/M/L)

We tried them all and ended up liking the smaller tree tops the best in terms of comfort.  A tip from our Audiologist is to pull your ear slightly back and up to get a better fit for any in-ear canal earbuds.  This worked like a charm.

The headphones themselves are equipped with memory wire which allows you to shape the wire to hook around your ear or however else you would like it.  Honestly, we didn’t have to change much.  The earbuds kind of twist into place because they are designed at a slight angle (to help achieve a better fit, see picture below) and the wire sits naturally just over and behind your ear.

MEElec Sport-Fi S6 Ear Gel

9mm driver with no ear tip attached, angled slightly for a better fit

It might have been a little better if the wire was about an inch longer (in order to hook it full around your ear), but overall we’re big fans of this design because of how lightweight it makes everything.

In addition to the earbuds, the armband also had a great fit.  We used it with an iPod and iPhone.  We were able to put the iPhone into the armband with the Otterbox Case on or without, so no problems there.  The only problem with the armband is it’s a pain to change songs if you’re using an iPhone.

There are no in-line controls, so you’ll either need to have your playlist in order or you’ll have the pull the iPhone out to switch to another song.

Bottom line is these are a great pair of sports headphones that are lightweight, comfortable and fit securely.  MEElectronics has included just about everything but the kitchen sink in the sport kit.  As an audiophile you could find better sound quality, but you’ll be paying 2-3 times the price of the S6 which retail at $49.99.

Specifications

  • Noise isolating
  • Memory wire ear hooks
  • 1 year manufacturer warranty
  • Sweat resistant
  • Tangle resistant cable

Painted Tunes WhiteWhen a lot of people think of workout earbuds the name Dual Electronics Corporation probably doesn’t come to mind.  But with their latest pair of headphones, Painted Tunes, maybe they should.

Pros

Great Noise Isolation.  Once you find a good fit these earbuds are about as close to noise cancelling as you can get.

Impressive Sound. Was pleasantly surprised by the bass response, great for some workout jams.

Tangle Resistant Cable.  More and more headphones are coming with a flat or “ribbon” cord that is tangle resistant and we’re glad that Dual Electronics included this feature.

Price.  It’s going to be hard to beat the sound quality of these earbuds at such a low price.

Cons

One Cable Length.  Non-adjustable cable.

No Cable Cinch or Clip.  Not a huge deal, but would have been nice to have a clip and cinch, especially when running.

Secure Fit.  It may not be entirely fair to list this as a con because we had no problems with the earbuds falling out.  However, as a standard we typically like to see some type of external support (ear hook, neckband, ear fin, etc.) to help keep the earbuds in place during an intense workout.

Full Review

Lately we’ve seen a lot of “flash” in terms of style added to sports headphones, so it was refreshing to see a simple and clean design from the Painted Tunes.

Click here to see all available colors

Painted Tunes Colors

The Painted Tunes earbuds come with 3 different size ear cups.  We tried the medium and small and found that the smaller ear cup tended to fit quite a bit better, especially since these are in-ear canal headphones.  So, they’re meant to seal off the ear canal if you want true noise isolation.

We weren’t really sure what to expect as we didn’t know too much about Dual Electronics, but we were pleasantly surprised with the quality sound output.  The highs could be a little more crisp, but the mids and bass make up for it.  Overall they put out a very smooth bass sound which is perfect for a good upbeat song during your workout.

Painted Tunes Earbuds

With their simplistic design it should be no surprise that the Painted Tunes are unbelievably light.  If it wasn’t for the longer cord we wouldn’t have even noticed them while running.  With that said, we finally found by wrapping the extra cable around the iPod clip that the cable wasn’t a problem, but you’ll definitely need to grab a cable clip if bouncing cables bother you at all.

The headphone cord itself is a flat, ribbon cord which is tangle resistant.  We used the tube they came in and shoved the headphones into the case to see if they would tangle, but the flat cord held true and they came out perfect.

While these earbuds don’t have a ton of features (i.e. cable clip, cinch, adjustable cables) it was actually quite nice because they double very well as laptop earbuds or travel earbuds.

Bottom line is if you’re looking for an inexpensive pair of great sounding earbuds then definitely check out the Painted Tunes.

Painted Tunes Box

Specifications

  • Noise isolating
  • Cord length = 48 inches

What’s in the Box

  • Painted Tunes earbuds
  • Tube carrying case
  • (3) ear cups (S/M/L)

Yurbuds Inspire Pro EarphonesYurbuds recently unveiled their new sport headphones at CES 2012.  Improving upon their already popular Yurbuds Inspire Ironman Series are the Yurbuds Inspire Pro.

Pros

Water Resistant Dry Mic.  The addition of in-line volume controls and a microphone, a sweat resistant one at that, takes the Yurbuds to the next level.

Patented Twist Lock Technology.  Completely unique design in terms of the ear bud, which allows for a perfect fit.

Ultra Soft Earbuds.  We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, the high grade silicone used is super soft.

Cons

Sweat Resistant.  We don’t actually have any complaints in this department, but it would be unfair not to mention that others have complained about their sweat resistance.  In all honesty this is likely happening to people who aren’t inserting the earbud into their ear canal properly.

What’s odd is we haven’t heard a single complaint about the Yurbuds Inspire regarding sweat resistance.

Full Review

We didn’t notice a single difference in terms of sound quality and comfort when compared to the Yurbuds Inspire Ironman Series.  Check out our previous review here.

Our quick recap is that these headphones sound great once you find a good fit, and their TwistLock technology keeps them in palce pretty much no matter what.

Where we did notice a difference was the added functionality of in-line controls.  We’re seeing more and more sports earphones offering this feature.  There should be no question why we’re seeing this added feature on most new workout headphones.  As more and more people are using either an iPhone or iPod when they workout, more and more people are going to want in-line controls.  Who wants to have to take out their iPod every few minutes just to change a song?  No one.

MEElectronics M6 Sports HeapdhonesThe M6 Sports In-Ear Sport Headphones are the first pair of workout headphones from MEElectronics.  We still can’t figure out why such a quality pair of sport ear buds are so cheap, but we’re glad they are.

Pros

Adjustable Ear Hook.  The M6 utilize something called memory wire to allow for a 100% custom fit over your ear.

Sound Quality.  Typically as price decreases so does sound quality.  We were pleasantly surprised to hear such high sound quality (once you get a good fit) for such a cheap price.

Lightweight.  Because the earbuds use memory wire instead of a thicker ear hook they become some of the lightest over-ear hook sports earbuds.

Cons

Getting a Proper Fit.  The only complaint we have is the amount of time it takes to get a great fit.  Once you get the fit it’s comfortable, but you’ll need to spend a bit of time adjusting the in-ear canal earbud, and then get accustomed to them for about a week.  If you want to watch a quick video about how to obtain the proper fit for these headphones, click here.

Full Review

One of the first things that grabbed our attention was the adjustable ear hook.  Very similar to the H2O Audio Trax, the MEE M6 utilize a stainless steel memory wire to allow for a custom fit.  This is a fairly unique feature as this is only the second pair of sport headphones we’ve seen with the memory wire.

As we mentioned above once you get a good fit the MEE M6 are pretty comfortable.  In addition, these earphones were definitely built for the active listener.  MEElectronics put together this pretty neat video that features a break dancer doing his best to make the active ear buds fall out, but to no avail.

The MEE M6 also exhibit a bit of noise reduction or noise isolation, so these are probably best used in the gym.  Though keep in mind they aren’t noise cancelling, so they won’t block out every sound around you.

Best iPhone Workout HeadphonesThe iPhone is a technological phenomena like we’ve never seen before.  Not only does nearly every person at every street corner seem to own one, but every person inside or outside a gym seems to be working out with them as well.  And in the rare occasion that they’re not using an iPhone then they’re using an iPod…so…one of the most popular questions has quickly become…

What are the Best Sports Headphones for the iPhone or iPod?

Unfortunately you’re not going to like our answer.  We’re not going to unveil some secret list of sports earbuds to replace those horrible white earbuds that Apple packages with their products.  Why?  Because there is no such list.  In all honesty nearly every sports headphones manufacturer we’ve encountered ensures that one of the first things they do is check for compatibility with the iPhone and iPod.  It would be silly not to.  Thus, the best sports headphones for the iPhone or iPod are – in most cases – the best sports headphones for any device.

However, some sports headphones are taking it to a whole new level by including specific integration with the iPhone with control talk features and in-line phone and music controls.  It’s these headphones that we recommend you look at first.

Our Top 6 Sports Headphones for the iPhone

*Note: we have not rated this list 1-6, these are just our overall top 6 listed in alphabetical order.

Bose MIE2i Sports EarbudsBose MIE2i

The Bose MIE2i are an adaptation from their industry leading Bose IE2 headphones, with a specific focus on increased functionality with Apple products.  The in-line controls feature call controls, such as one touch answering and volume and track controls that work seamlessly with Apple products

Of all the headphones on the list the Bose MIE2i and the Sennheiser CX 680i are the only sports earbuds that utilize an ear fin system to hold the earbuds in place while working out or training.  This is becoming increasingly popular for people who are trying to avoid an in-ear canal earbud, but still wanting a great fit.

iPhone Workout EarbudsKlipsch Image S4i

The Klipsch Image S4i are a takeoff of the Klipsch Image S4, with the added functionality of a 3 button Apple control.  One feature they put a lot of effort into is an echo-cancelling  microphone that is built into the in-line controls.  This can definitely come in handy if you’re using these to answer a call while at the gym.

While the Klipsch Image S4i are still an incredible set of sports earbuds for the iPhone, we highly recommend you check out the updated Klipsch Image S5i (directly below).

Klipsch Image S5i Rugged HeadphonesKlipsch Image S5i

Klipsch decided to capitalize on the popularity of the Klipsch Image S4i by creating the Klipsch Image S5i.  Not only do they also sound amazing and utilize their patented oval ear tips, but they’ve also put a major emphasis on durability which will go a long way for any athlete that loves to train while tuned into their favorite songs.

One additional feature they’ve added to the inline controls is to make the actual buttons larger.  This makes these headphones perfect for someone utilizing them with gloves on, for instance, skiing.

Polk Ultrafit 3000 Sports HeadphonesPolk Audio UltraFit 3000

The UltraFit 3000 from Polk Audio are the newest sports headphones on this list and also the only ear hook headphones included.  These are 1 of 4 of Polk Audio’s new line of sports headphones and one of the only ones to include in-line controls that function with the iPhone.

While these are a bit newer and not as tested as the others on this list, Polk Audio is well known for extraordinary sound quality and if you’re a runner you may like the addition of the ear hook to keep these in place.  Definitely check these out.  It doesn’t hurt that they look pretty nice as well, coming in multiple different colors.

Sennheiser Adidas CX 680i Sports HeadsetSennheiser CX 680i

The Sennheiser CX 680i are very similar to the Bose MIE2i, in that they also utilize an ear fin system for a secure fit while working out.  Just like the Bose, these headphones will stay put once you have them in.

An added benefit that you’ll notice most Sennheiser sports headphones utilize is the bright yellow color on the controls and cord.  Not only does at add a little bit of style, but it’s also a safety factor for anyone running at night or working out at dusk.

Sennheiser Adidas PMX 680i Sports HeadsetSennheiser PMX 680i

The Sennheiser PMX 680i are the only neckband headphones on this list.  They utilize the same system as the Sennheiser CX 680i (mentioned above).

These are some of the single most popular sports headphones in the past couple years, and continue to be a standard for neckband headphones.  We’ve had some great input from cyclists who really love these headphones.

H2O Audio Trax Custom Fit Sports HeadphonesH2O Audio has launched their newest line of waterproof sports headphones, the Trax Custom Fit Sports Headphones.  One of the first pair of sports earbuds to utilize memory wire.

Pros

Custom Fit.  It probably goes without saying that the number one feature of the Trax Custom Fit Sports Headphones is there custom fit abilit

Memory.  H2O utilizes a moldable memory wire that you can bend to help secure your earbuds in place.

Price.  These days adding the word “custom” to anything seems to mean that you’ll end up paying hundreds of dollars.  The Trax retail for $39.99, which is pretty unbelievable.

Tangle Free Cord.  Tired of your cord getting all tangled up when you’re running or when you toss your headphones in your gym bag?  Well that stops right now.

Cons

Not Ideal for Swimming.  The H2O Audio Trax aren’t ideal for swimming.  While they are 100% waterproof, they are only waterproof for 30 minutes up to 3 feet deep.  If you’re looking purely for swimming headphones you’re better off trying the H2O Audio Surge 2G.

Our Review

We’re always on the lookout for some fun new technology and the H2O Audio Trax Custom Fit Sports Headphones meet that criteria.  We haven’t seen any workout earbuds utilize memory wire in order to create a better fit.  While we’re used to seeing headphones aimed more in the direction of swimming H2O Audio specifically states that these were designed with runner’s in mind.

Trax Custom Fit Sports EarbudsIf you’ve ever had problems with damaging headphones from sweat or rain these may be the best headphones for you.  While they’re not ideal for swimming because they’re only waterproof up to 3 feet and for 30 minutes, they are ideal for those who like to get outside to train.  Rain or shine you’re going to get a great pair of sports earbuds.

Another feature that we’re seeing stressed more and more is safety.  The Trax Sports Headphones feature a high visibility cord and come in two different higher visibility colors to increase safety for runners who may be working out at dusk or later.  H2O is naming this the “ultimate running and sport headphone,” but only time will tell if that is the case.

Don’t forget to check out the H2O Audio Amphibx GO Lightweight Waterproof Case if you plan on using your iPhone as the source of your tunes.
