JLab Go Waterproof MP3 PlayerIf you’re looking for a waterproof MP3 player for swimming the JLab GO may be the perfect fit.  The great thing about this MP3 player (with headphones) is that you can use it for more than just swimming, like running or working out at the gym.

Pros

100% Waterproof.  Unlike a lot of headphones that are just water resistant, these MP3 player headphones can be completely submerged and still pump out your favorite tunes.

Headphones and MP3 Player.  Unlike the Apple Waterfi you won’t need to purchase a set of waterproof headphones as well.

Great Bass Response.  Get ready to be pumped up with some overpowering bass.

Cons

Awkward Earbud Fit.  It’s hard to say exactly why they felt awkward, but they just didn’t feel as comfortable as we would normally like.

Full Review

Have you ever been snorkeling or hitting the lap pool and just thought, “Man I wish I had my tunes with me!”  Well, JLabs has solved that problem with their JLab GO, which are completely submersible MP3 player headphones.

The one thing JLab got right for sure is sound quality.  A lot of people may complain that the mids and highs are sub par, but this is a workout people.  We need some serious bass to get pumped up (at least most of us do) and that’s what you’ll find with the JLab GO.  So, sound quality was a plus for us.

We mentioned above that the fit was a little awkward and we assume JLabs knew this as they also included 7 pairs of ear tips to help achieve the right fit.  The MP3 player headphones are extremely light considering they include headphones AND an MP3 player, but they will take a little time getting used to as opposed to just conventional workout headphones.

If you typically swim with goggles or a cap don’t worry JLabs thought of that and included a brief description on how to achieve a good fit with goggles in the owner’s manual.  In addition they also walk you through the main buttons on the MP3 player, which are: on/off, volume up/volume down, next/previous song.  You’ll have to eventually memorize where these buttons are

As for getting music on the MP3 player it’s a simple as plugging in the USB cable (included) to your computer and uploading the songs, nothing really fancy there.

Overall this is a nice little MP3 player for pretty much any workout and especially for those who want to take their music underwater.

H2O Audio Trax Custom Fit Sports HeadphonesH2O Audio has launched their newest line of waterproof sports headphones, the Trax Custom Fit Sports Headphones.  One of the first pair of sports earbuds to utilize memory wire.

Pros

Custom Fit.  It probably goes without saying that the number one feature of the Trax Custom Fit Sports Headphones is there custom fit abilit

Memory.  H2O utilizes a moldable memory wire that you can bend to help secure your earbuds in place.

Price.  These days adding the word “custom” to anything seems to mean that you’ll end up paying hundreds of dollars.  The Trax retail for $39.99, which is pretty unbelievable.

Tangle Free Cord.  Tired of your cord getting all tangled up when you’re running or when you toss your headphones in your gym bag?  Well that stops right now.

Cons

Not Ideal for Swimming.  The H2O Audio Trax aren’t ideal for swimming.  While they are 100% waterproof, they are only waterproof for 30 minutes up to 3 feet deep.  If you’re looking purely for swimming headphones you’re better off trying the H2O Audio Surge 2G.

Our Review

We’re always on the lookout for some fun new technology and the H2O Audio Trax Custom Fit Sports Headphones meet that criteria.

We haven’t seen any workout earbuds utilize memory wire in order to create a better fit.  While we’re used to seeing headphones aimed more in the direction of swimming H2O Audio specifically states that these were designed with runner’s in mind.

Trax Custom Fit Sports EarbudsIf you’ve ever had problems with damaging headphones from sweat or rain these may be the best headphones for you.

While they’re not ideal for swimming because they’re only waterproof up to 3 feet and for 30 minutes, they are ideal for those who like to get outside to train.  Rain or shine you’re going to get a great pair of sports earbuds.

Another feature that we’re seeing stressed more and more is safety.  The Trax Sports Headphones feature a high visibility cord and come in two different higher visibility colors to increase safety for runners who may be working out at dusk or later.

H2O is naming this the “ultimate running and sport headphone,” but only time will tell if that is the case.

Don’t forget to check out the H2O Audio Amphibx GO Lightweight Waterproof Case if you plan on using your iPhone as the source of your tunes.

Best Swimming Headphones of 2011

Finding a decent waterproof MP3 player may be somewhat easy, especially since Apple is releasing products like their Waterfi Waterproof iPod Shuffle.  The problem comes along when you’re trying to find a quality pair of waterproof headphones.

General Criteria

We previously outlined our general criteria for best sports headphones here.

Swimming Criteria

  1. Waterproof.  This may seem like a no brainer, but unfortunately many companies claim their headphones are “waterproof” when in fact they mean water-resistant, which is entirely different.  Swimming headphones should be 100% waterproof up to at least a depth of 10 feet, which will be more than sufficient.
  2. Multiple Earbud Sizes.  Most waterproof headphones utilize high quality earbuds to create a tight seal in your ear canal, preventing any intrusion of water.  You’ll want to make sure the pair of swimming headphones you pick up have different size earbuds to ensure a good fit.

Best Swimming Headphones of 2011

This is the only list in our Best of 2011 series that features just 2 pairs of headphones as opposed to 3.  We just didn’t think there were 3 real high quality headphones and didn’t want to steer anyone in the wrong direction.

Number 1H2O Audio Surge Waterproof Sport Headphones

H20 Audio has a lock on the larger market segment of swimming headphones.  This is well known.  And the reason being is they make some of the best swimming headphones for the most affordable price.  We don’t think they compete in terms of sound quality with some of the bigger players like Audio Bone, but they more than make up for it with their great warranty and customer service.  Expect to see their new line of swimming headphones dominate 2012.

Number 2Laird Hamilton Signature Waterproof Headphones

The Laird Hamilton Waterproof Headphones have been around the block a few times.  H20 Audio continues to improve each year with their swimming headphones and their new line is certain to bump these headphones off this list.  But for now, they sit at number 3.

BonusWaterfi 100% Waterproof MP3 Player Swim System

We know these aren’t exactly swimming headphones, but we wanted you to see our top pick for waterproof MP3 player.  This system is great for anyone looking for a one stop shop for swimming headphones.

What to expect in 2012?

While we would have loved to tested the new H20 Audio product, they’ll have to wait until 2012 to make our “Best of…” list.  On November 22, 2011 they release their latest swimming headphones, the H2O Audio IE2-MBK Contact 2G.  Also expect to see a lot more headphones that are specifically made for iPods, such as the Waterfi above.

Update 6/29/15: These headphones have been discontinued by the manufacturer. We recommend taking a look at some of our other waterproof headphones.

Laird Hamilton Signature Waterproof HeadphonesIf you’re looking for a solid pair of waterproof headphones for a good price then look no further than the trusted Laird Hamilton Signature Waterproof Headphones.

Pros

  • Fit.  One of the hugest issues with waterproof headphones if the fit, but you’re provided with 10 elastomer earbugs, which should guarantee a great fit.
  • Price.  You’re not likely to find a cheaper pair of waterproof headphones.

Cons

  • No Clip.  It was hard to find something negative, and while not having a clip to attach to your shirt may be a problem if you’re using these for running, it definitely isn’t a problem for swimmers.

Full Review

The Laird Hamilton Signature Waterproof Headphones are actually part of a collection created by H20 Audio, and we are of the opinion that H20 Audio makes some of the highest quality waterproof swimming headphones around.

A lot of times there are issues with swimming headphones.  Not all the time, but issues do happen.  One of the best things about the H20 Audio products are their lifetime warranty.  Unless you’ve smashed your headphones with a hammer there is a good chance that any damage to your headphones from normal use and H20 Audio will send you a new pair with a simple phone call.

Update 6/29/15: The Audio Surge 2g have been discontinued by H2O, but you can still find them in limited supply on Amazon. You may also want to check out our top picks for best swimming headphones as an alternative to these.

H2O Audio Surge

With the invention of waterproof sports headphones you can literally take your music anywhere.  H2O Audio has seamlessly made the transition for great sports headphones to great swimming headphones with their H2O Audio Surge 2G.  Prepare to take your tunes under water!

Pros

Sound Quality.  Non stop music whether ABOVE or BELOW water.

Comfort and Fit.  Ergonomic fit means comfort and staying power, and absolutely no leaks.

Price.  Still unsure how H2O Audio can offer such a cool product at such a low price.

Cons

Before we move onto the cons we want to add a couple sentences of disclaimer.  These are one of the best swimming headphones on the market currently, but if you’re not planning on using them for swimming only there are definitely better workout headphones available.  With that said, while we listed a few pros above, the product has similar cons that we’ve mentioned so that people’s expectations aren’t let down.  The end result is we still think these are great swimming headphones or we wouldn’t have put them on the site.

Comfort and Fit.  Some consumers have complained of the earbud loosening up, but that’s another reason they give you 5 pairs.

Sound Quality.  There are better quality headphones for workouts that don’t involve water, for cheaper.

Full Review

If you love to swim for one of your workouts during the week, but hate not being able to listen to music, these will be perfect for you.  The first time you go under water with your favorite tunes pumping in your ears is truly awesome.  The great thing about the H2O Audio Surge 2G is the sound quality doesn’t change whether you’re performing underwater laps or running through a series of strokes taking your in and out of the water.

The only drawback we had was using these headphones consistently out of the water did not compare to the sound quality of other workout headphones like the Bose IE2.

We recommend these for people including a swimming workout at least once a week in order to get your money’s worth.  These will also be perfect for any triathlon trainers or surfers.  Just make sure you take care of the earbuds by cleaning them if exposed to saltwater.

One last question you may want to answer before buying, “Want to be like Mike?”  Michael Phelps that is.

  • Weight: 0.5 ounces

28 Olympic Medals later and swimming has made it’s comeback as one of the top sports in the United States thanks to Michael Phelps.  Not only has swimming become more popular on a competitive level, but it has also become a staple for a balanced workout.

The problem for a lot of people, however, was the fact that swimming laps wasn’t all that exciting.

Well you can put that behind you. With the introduction of submersible MP3 players and swimming headphones that are completely waterproof you can take your workout to a whole new level.

Our Top Pick

USTEK WP-593 Wired Waterproof Earbuds
USTEK-WP-593-Wired-Waterproof-Headphones

Before we move on to our top 10 list, we’ve first got to cover one important piece of information: IP ratings.

IP ratings or IP code stands for International Protection (marking). It is the standard by which electronics (in this case headphones) are measured to resist/protect against dust and water.

For the purpose of swimming headphones, we’ve limited it to the following 3 ratings:

  1. IPX8. Submersible over 3 feet (usually up to 10-12 feet).
  2. IPX7. Submersible up to 3 feet.
  3. IP67. Not submersible, but can withstand high velocity water/dust

Here’s a closer look at how each rating is determined (by Tao Tronics).

ipx-ratings-for-headphones-explained

You’ll notice in the table below we’ve gone ahead and listed the depth to which the headphones can be submerged.

Also note that there are 1 pair of headphones that have a 0 feet submersible depth. That’s not a mistake. We wanted to keep one pair on there for people who sweat profusely, or just want to use them in the shower, etc.

Now onto the list…

Top 10 Swimming Headphones

Swimming headphones are still fairly new to the scene of workout headphones. There aren’t a whole lot of choices, and there are tons of mixed reviews.

We felt it would be helpful to tell you about the top 10 swimming headphones. The next time you hit the pool you won’t be disappointed in any of these.

Bonus Pick: ARIA Waterproof Earbuds

ARIA’s new earbuds are 100% wireless and 100% waterproof. Perfect combination for a nice workout in the pool.

They’re currently only available in the crowdfunding stage, but you can read more about them here.

Olympic Swimmers Use Headphones to Help Focus

If you’ve ever watched the Olympic swimming events then you may have noticed one piece of swimming gear that is seeming to stand out above the rest: headphones.

We’ve seen a number of swimmers walking to the pool with headphones on refusing to take them off until moments before slipping into the water before an event.  Unfortunately a lot of fans have been expressing dismay towards this popular trend.  Many of the fans have never been athletes and just don’t understand how much focus is required to compete at such high levels, and for many Olympians, music is the key to that focus.

So, who all have we seen wearing headphones?

Well, Sun Yang was seen sporting a pair of Beats by Dre prior to his gold medal performance in 2012.  This isn’t all that surprising seeing as how Beats by Dre have possibly become the most popular headphones in the world and seemingly in just a couple short years.

What really gets people talking is when Michael Phelps, possibly the greatest Olympian ever, starts wearing headphones before all of his events.  Phelps has been seen wearing a massive pair by Sol Republic.

When Kevin Lee, chief executive of Sol Republic, was asked about Phelps wearing Sol Republic he said he did not know that Phelps would be wearing his company’s headphones during the Games.

It doesn’t end with just Michael Phelps and Sun Yang though.  Ryan Lochte, Park Tai-hwan, and Liam Tancock have also been spotted warming up mentally with a pair of sports cans.

Final Thoughts

Not only did we include a wide array of IP ratings (aka submersible depth), but we also included a wide range of prices, headphone styles, colors, and features (i.e. built-in MP3 player).

Here’s our thoughts on each in a little more detail.

No phone needed. For swimmers who want to leave their phone in the locker room go with the Alpatronix or Pyle, both of which have built-in MP3 players.

Keeping it simple. You’ll need an armband for your phone or an iPod attachment, but it’s hard to be any of the earbuds on the list: Ustek, Swimbuds, or X-1.

A little more security. If you’re worried your headphones may fall off, try some of the ear hooks or neckband style: Edelin, SENSO, HydroActive, or Otium.

Going all in. The Bragi Dash are the only pair of completely wireless earbuds, but they’re still rather new and not as proven as the other styles. But man are they cool.

Now go hit the pool!
