Denon Exercise Freak HeadphonesDenon recently released the Exercise Freak, which is a Bluetooth sports headphones from their new series of headphones.  Coming in a variety of colors and with tons of features these are another pair of amazing wireless workout headphones.  Read our review below to see exactly how they stacked up.

Pros

Super Lightweight.  The neckband is flexible and lightweight keeping the overall weight of the headphones to a minimum.

Features and Controls.  We really like the location and ease of use of the controls for music and calls.

Multiple Colors Available.  You can find the Exercise Freak in blue, yellow, or black.  We’re kinda partial to the blue and yellow though.

Cons

Price.  Besides the Monster iSport these are the most expensive workout headphones we’ve reviewed.  The Denon name and premium quality does come with these, but you’ll have to decide if that’s worth it.

Earbud Seal.  This is kind of a pro and a con depending on how you look at it.  The round style silicone tips don’t seal the ear canal 100%, which means you lose a little bit of noise isolation.  However, it does allow you to be a bit more aware of your surroundings, which is a great thing if you workout outdoors.

Full Review

The Exercise Freak is the first pair of headphones devoted solely to sports by Denon.

Denon Exercise Freak Color Options

Below is a pretty nice photo by Denon showing all the features and controls.  As we mentioned above we really like how the ear piece that sits behind the ear holds all the controls.  Our audiologist took one look at these headphones and said, “It’s about time the headphone manufacturers started taking note of how hearing aid manufacturers have been doing this for years.”

Take a close look at the large round button on the ear piece.  This is a tap-to-talk button that essentially switches between music and phone if you have it hooked up to your iPhone or other smartphone.  You’ll also notice the volume/play/pause controls are on the top/back of the ear piece and the microphone is just underneath the ear piece, which is a perfect location to avoid wind distortion when working out outside.

Denon Exercise Freak features

One feature not shown above is the reflective lining on the neckband, perfect for evening (or early morning) workouts.  If you’re putting safety first this is becoming a must have feature for those of us that don’t workout in a gym.

Another cool feature is the Sport App they’ve created to work seamlessly with these headphones (though any other sport app would work as well).  This is another common feature that we’re seeing with a lot of new sports headphones (i.e. the Motorola SF Series)

Overall we’re a big fan of the Denon Exercise Freak.  We think they did a great job with their first pair of Bluetooth sports headphones, and our only real drawback is the price, which is anticipated to be $149.  It’s hard to convince us to spend that much when other headphones such as the Jaybird Freedom are available for less.  We do understand a lot of people love Denon headphones and that may be worth the premium.

  • Sweat-resistant
  • Weight: 23 grams (0.8 ounces)

AfterShokz Sport HeadphoneIf the Aftershokz Bone Conduction Headphones look familiar it’s probably because you saw them at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2012. We also previously talked briefly about them in our roundup of hot new headphones for 2012.

Pros

Environmental Awareness. These headphones have no portion that fits in your ear, which allows you to listen to your favorite song and still be aware of your surroundings.

Meets Unique Needs. If you have sensory aural hearing loss these headphones will be the right fit for you.

Reduces Chance of Noise Induced Hearing Loss. More and more people are being diagnosed with noise induced hearing loss, and much of this is contributed to younger generations blaring their music in their ears. The Aftershokz eliminate this concern.

Cons

New and Awkward. While bone conduction technology has been around for quite some time, combining bone conduction with sport headphones is still a newer idea, which means most people will find them a bit awkward.

Heavy In-Line Controls. Because these headphones are powered by bone conduction (essentially vibrations) they require you to charge a batter that resides within the in-line controls making it quite a bit bulkier than other cords. It does come with a sport clip, so that does help a lot.

Limited Use. While sports headphones are specifically tailored to increasing performance under training conditions, they can still be used for things like travel. With the Aftershokz you’ll be limited to where you can use these headphones depending on your environment.

Full Review

Our staff Audiologist had a field day with these headphones. She was so excited to talk about bone conduction that we had to stop her from writing this review. Either that or you may end up bored to death (shh, don’t tell her we said that).

There are 2 different sport models of the Aftershokz:

  1. AS 300
  2. AS 301 (includes in-line microphone, this is the model we’re reviewing)

Bone conduction audio devices were originally designed for the hearing impaired and more recently for soldiers who needed to be tuned into both their environment and radio communication. So, the technology has quite a history.

What exactly is bone conduction? Bone conduction is the vibration of the bones of the skull to detect sound. With standard headphones, sound waves travel through the ear canal which vibrates the eardrum and sends the signal to the inner ear. With bone conduction, sound wave vibrations deliver sound by vibration of the bones of the skull which delivers a signal to the inner ear where it is heard.

Aftershokz is not the first manufacturer to bring bone conduction to the sporting world. Audio Bone also has a pair of bone conduction sports headphones that we’ve previously talked about, but Aftershokz is the first to deliver this technology with a decent sound quality.

Aftershokz Headphones

The Aftershokz come with an in-line controller that is used to power on and off the headphones as well as volume control and an in-line mic (if you choose that option). There’s not much you need to do when receiving a call, as all music is stopped instantly. The in-line controller is a bit larger than normal because it houses the rechargeable lithium ion battery that powers the headphones. We didn’t do a ton of running with the headphones, but could easily see where the larger in-line housing could be kind of annoying if it started bouncing around a lot.

Aftershokz Charging

While the sound quality is decent, actually a lot better than the last pair of bone conduction sport headphones we tried, it’s still not quite the same as conventional earphones or earbuds.

At the end of the day bone conduction technology is nothing short of awesome. But for the same price you can get a much higher quality sound from conventional workout headphones.

Arriva Leo Bluetooth HeadphonesSomehow the release of the Arriva Leo headphones slipped right by us.  It wasn’t until just a couple weeks ago that we received an email from one of our readers asking us to review these headphones that we actually saw them.  Make sure you read our full review to see what we thought of these funky Bluetooth headphones.

Pros

Unique Control Location.  This is the first pair of workout headphones we’ve seen where the controls are nowhere near the ears.  Some will like it, some will hate it.  We thought it was innovative.

Secure Fit.  You can instantly tell these headphones were built to fit securely.  The question becomes, are they a little too snug?

Cons

Short Battery Life.  We hate to be picky because we don’t foresee any 5+ hour workouts in the near future, but these headphones will only last that long on one charge, 2-3 hours short of the usual average for Bluetooth sports headphones.

Awkard Earbud Fit.  These earpieces are very similar to the iLuv FitActive, only they seem to be made with a material that doesn’t flex very well and is a bit uncomfortable.

Note: Arriva has addressed this issue by including Acoustibuds (which work great)

Full Review

The Arriva Leo is straight up funky…in a good way.

This is a very unique pair of workout headphones, visually, but how do they stack up?

It’s pretty clear from the get go that Arriva is marketing these headphones for extreme sports, but we found it a bit odd that their web page clearly goes out of the way to state these are not waterproof and then accompanies that with a photo of a guy skiing.  No big deal, there’s very few headphones outside of H2O that are 100% waterproof anyways.  They are however water-resistant, which should be enough for most (good) skiers or snowboarders.

The sound quality was average, nothing great, nothing horrible, so not a lot of comments there.

Out biggest hang up was on the most obvious feature, the noodle like arms.  Arriva did a great job in creating a frame that stays put, but at the same time we found 2 problems with that frame:

  1. It’s not all that comfortable, until you break them in for a bit
  2. It doesn’t hold it’s shape

Attached to those arms, on the very back of the headset, are the controls which we actually did like.  We tested these with a few different style helmets and didn’t have a problem getting them to fit, so that was definitely a plus for bikers or snowboarders.

Overall we like the idea behind the Leo and could see a use for them if were were having difficulty with other style headphones staying fit.  But we feel as though they definitely have some room for improvement, so hopefully we’ll see some LEO 2.0s in the future.

Motorola SF600Surprisingly we’ve received a number of emails asking about information related to the Motorola SF 600.  We’re not sure if it was all the hype Motorola created when they announced their new SF Series (and then didn’t release half of them!) or if people are just looking for an upgrade to their Motorola S305 (which still rock in our opinion)) or more likely the Motorola S10.

Either way, we’ve finally reviewed the new Motorola SF 600.

Pros

Price.  Some people are going to disagree because the MSRP is $129.99, which is on the higher end for sports headphones, but you get more than your money’s worth, especially if you’re serious about your music and your workouts.

Built with Kevlar.  No, your headphones likely aren’t bullet proof, but they are unbelievably light since they are built with scratch resistant Kevlar.

Sweat Resistant.  To add further to the durability the Motorola utilized hydrophobic mesh and silicone seals to help keep moisture out.

Cons

Neckband cord.  Most neckband headphones use a more sturdy/stiff plastic band that sits just off your neck.  The SF 600 use a flexible cable that actually rests/touches your neck a lot during the workout.  Wasn’t a huge deal, but it did bother us a little bit.  It’s also not adjustable, though neckbands usually aren’t.

buy-button-325x54

Full Review

When Motorola created the SF 600 they made them to function perfectly with their “Ultimate Fitness Device” the MOTOACTV.  We’re not going to get into details on the MOTOACTV, but if you’re considering these headphones we recommend you check out this device.

The first thing we want to talk about is the design.  The SF 600 feature a design similar to the Jabra Sport and Jaybird Freedom, which utilizes a thin cord to connect each ear bud and also acts as a neckband.

The controls sit on the top of each earbud.  The right earbud houses the volume and multi-function button (forward/back/play/pause) and the left earbud holds the power button.  The buttons are fairly easy to get to, though if you’re not to Bluetooth it may take some time to get accustomed to reach up to your ear to adjust everything.

Motorola SF600 Wireless Sports Headphones

Once you’ve figured out which ear gel gives you the best fit, and you get to choose from 5 different ear gels, the sound quality is pretty dang good.  Lo/Mid/Hi ranges all sounded very solid.  We were expecting to experience a lot of ambient noise or distortion from wind because the ear buds are pretty exposed, but we were pleasantly surprised.

As for the fit, they were extremely comfortable and not once did we have a problem with them coming lose or falling off.  We should point out though that the a secure fit seems to rely more on the ear buds than the ear hook, so it’s important that you spend the time to choose the right size ear cushions.  The only thing that bothered us slightly was the thin cable that connects the earbuds.  It’s about 8 inches long and sometimes it felt a little awkward/uncomfortable resting on our neck.

These are Bluetooth headphones so we did take a few calls and everything worked out fine.  When you get an incoming call it will actually stop your music and announce the call allowing you to take it or not.  The microphone (which is built into the headphones) was average, nothing great, nothing bad.

Bottom line is sound quality is great, durability is exceptional, comfort is above average.  Combined with the MOTOACTV these really are some of the best sports headphones available.

  • Bluetooth range = 30 feet
  • Battery life = 5-6 hours
  • Charging time = 1-2 hours

Renowned headphone manufacturer creates their first “street style” headphones with the Grado iGrado Headphones.  If you’re looking for highly portable pair of headphones then these may be your best bet as far as sound quality goes.

Pros

High Quality Sound.  With any Grado product you know you’re going to get at least one thing every time: great sound.  The iGrado headphones are no different.

Open Air Earphones.  This style of earphones are also known as on ear headphones.  They may not be perfect for the gym, but they are perfect for anyone looking to take their workout outdoors and still be aware of their surroundings.

Can Be Used for More than Just Working Out.  The problem with many workout headphones is that often times you might prefer a different style or slightly better sound quality for something like watching movies on your laptop.  If you’re looking for an all around great pair of portable headphones, then the iGrado fit the bill.

Cons

Earpads are Comfortable but Not Sweat Resistant.  While Grado made these headphones specifically for “portable listening”, they didn’t take into consideration sweat resistance.  It’s not a huge deal, especially if you don’t sweat a lot because the earpads are so comfortable, but if you break a sweat easily then you may want to look into some different workout headphones.

iGrado Earpads

Full Review Review

The iGrado Headphones look very similar in appearance to the very popular Motorola S305 Bluetooth Headphones.  They utilize a neckband style which has become very popular among runners, and also feature open air earphones, more commonly referred to on ear headphones.

One thing that has been pointed out about the iGrado Headphones is the nonadjustable neckband.  It’s not always common that neckband headphones are adjustable, but a common complaint about the iGrado is that they run a tad small and tend to be a little tight.

At the end of the day if you’re tired of jamming tiny little earbuds into your ear then some on ear headphones like the iGrado Headphones may be perfect for you.

UltraFit 2000 Sport HeadphonesThe UltraFit 2000 are the first neckband sports headphones offered by Polk Audio.  If you’re a serious runner or just love to workout outside definitely make sure you look hard at these headphones, as they offer some great features at an amazing price.

Pros

Perfect for Outdoor Exercise.  The over the ear design makes these perfect for someone who likes to workout outside, allowing the user to not only listen to their favorite song but also be aware of their surroundings.

Multiple Ear Pad Options.  Polk Audio has gone out of the way to provide different types of ear pads, so that you can find some that meet your need in any environment.

Tangle Free Cord.  You may think this feature is kind of gimmicky, but we assure it is not.  The cord is a bit flatter and thicker than a normal cord and if you’re like us and just toss your headphones in your gym bag haphazardly then this feature will come in handy.

Cons

Sound Quality.  It’s not really that the sound quality is bad, it’s that any over the ear headphone is going to have to compete with ambient noises.  Being able to hear your surroundings keeps you safe, but it also causes a slight reduction in clarity of sound.

Hard to Adjust Ear Pads.  While it’s a pretty cool feature to have different type ear pads for different weather conditions and activities, the ear pads are slightly difficult to get on and off.

buy-button-325x54

Full Review

We’re big fans of using over the ear headphones for biking and running, so we were pretty excited when Polk released an over the ear, neckband sports headphone within their new UltraFit series.  While ear buds are becoming more and more popular in an exercise or sports environment there’s still a place for earphones, especially if you’ve ever had problems with earbuds not staying in during a workout.  The UltraFit 2000 solves that problem by not only utilizing a sports earphone, but also a comfortable neckband.

The UltraFit 2000 doesn’t come equipped with in-line controls, but it does have a built in microphone and 3 button controls placed right on the earphone itself.  It’s compatible with most smart phones, including the iPhone, so if you are set on using your iPhone or iPod as your MP3 player these will work well for you.

UltraFit 2000 OrangeAnother small feature that Polk Audio has done a great job with is style.  All of their UltraFit Sports Headphones come in a variety of different colors.  So whether you prefer the traditional black or want to add a little bit of flare with a bright orange and white, the UltraFit 2000 has you covered.

Best iPhone Workout HeadphonesThe iPhone is a technological phenomena like we’ve never seen before.  Not only does nearly every person at every street corner seem to own one, but every person inside or outside a gym seems to be working out with them as well.  And in the rare occasion that they’re not using an iPhone then they’re using an iPod…so…one of the most popular questions has quickly become…

What are the Best Sports Headphones for the iPhone or iPod?

Unfortunately you’re not going to like our answer.  We’re not going to unveil some secret list of sports earbuds to replace those horrible white earbuds that Apple packages with their products.  Why?  Because there is no such list.  In all honesty nearly every sports headphones manufacturer we’ve encountered ensures that one of the first things they do is check for compatibility with the iPhone and iPod.  It would be silly not to.  Thus, the best sports headphones for the iPhone or iPod are – in most cases – the best sports headphones for any device.

However, some sports headphones are taking it to a whole new level by including specific integration with the iPhone with control talk features and in-line phone and music controls.  It’s these headphones that we recommend you look at first.

Our Top 6 Sports Headphones for the iPhone

*Note: we have not rated this list 1-6, these are just our overall top 6 listed in alphabetical order.

Bose MIE2i Sports EarbudsBose MIE2i

The Bose MIE2i are an adaptation from their industry leading Bose IE2 headphones, with a specific focus on increased functionality with Apple products.  The in-line controls feature call controls, such as one touch answering and volume and track controls that work seamlessly with Apple products

Of all the headphones on the list the Bose MIE2i and the Sennheiser CX 680i are the only sports earbuds that utilize an ear fin system to hold the earbuds in place while working out or training.  This is becoming increasingly popular for people who are trying to avoid an in-ear canal earbud, but still wanting a great fit.

Click here for our full review

iPhone Workout EarbudsKlipsch Image S4i

The Klipsch Image S4i are a takeoff of the Klipsch Image S4, with the added functionality of a 3 button Apple control.  One feature they put a lot of effort into is an echo-cancelling  microphone that is built into the in-line controls.  This can definitely come in handy if you’re using these to answer a call while at the gym.

While the Klipsch Image S4i are still an incredible set of sports earbuds for the iPhone, we highly recommend you check out the updated Klipsch Image S5i (directly below).

Klipsch Image S5i Rugged HeadphonesKlipsch Image S5i

Klipsch decided to capitalize on the popularity of the Klipsch Image S4i by creating the Klipsch Image S5i.  Not only do they also sound amazing and utilize their patented oval ear tips, but they’ve also put a major emphasis on durability which will go a long way for any athlete that loves to train while tuned into their favorite songs.

One additional feature they’ve added to the inline controls is to make the actual buttons larger.  This makes these headphones perfect for someone utilizing them with gloves on, for instance, skiing.

Polk Ultrafit 3000 Sports HeadphonesPolk Audio UltraFit 3000

The UltraFit 3000 from Polk Audio are the newest sports headphones on this list and also the only ear hook headphones included.  These are 1 of 4 of Polk Audio’s new line of sports headphones and one of the only ones to include in-line controls that function with the iPhone.

While these are a bit newer and not as tested as the others on this list, Polk Audio is well known for extraordinary sound quality and if you’re a runner you may like the addition of the ear hook to keep these in place.  Definitely check these out.  It doesn’t hurt that they look pretty nice as well, coming in multiple different colors.

Click here for our full review

Sennheiser Adidas CX 680i Sports HeadsetSennheiser CX 680i

The Sennheiser CX 680i are very similar to the Bose MIE2i, in that they also utilize an ear fin system for a secure fit while working out.  Just like the Bose, these headphones will stay put once you have them in.

An added benefit that you’ll notice most Sennheiser sports headphones utilize is the bright yellow color on the controls and cord.  Not only does at add a little bit of style, but it’s also a safety factor for anyone running at night or working out at dusk.

Click here for our full review

Sennheiser Adidas PMX 680i Sports HeadsetSennheiser PMX 680i

The Sennheiser PMX 680i are the only neckband headphones on this list.  They utilize the same system as the Sennheiser CX 680i (mentioned above).

These are some of the single most popular sports headphones in the past couple years, and continue to be a standard for neckband headphones.  We’ve had some great input from cyclists who really love these headphones.

What are some other sports headphones that work great with the iPhone?

As we mentioned above it is very rare that we come across earbuds that don’t function well with Apple products.  While the above sports earbuds have the added functionality of in-line controls to add to their sports features, there are still other great workout earbuds for the iPhone.  If you’re looking to check out some of the other options, we highly recommend you check out these amazing sports headphones.

Comfort.  These headphones were designed with ergonomics in mind, meaning they were designed for comfort.

Cons

Bluetooth Connectivity.  There have been some complaints of obstruction.  While obstruction is present in all Bluetooth technology the main complaint is dropped sound while running possibly caused by your arms obstructing the signal.

At first glance the GOgroove AudioActive seems like a decent sports headset.  Unfortunately once you dive in a bit deeper  that’s not the case.  While they are fairly comfortable and have a nice secure fit they just seem incomplete.  The Bluetooth technology works decent, but not amazing, and it’s the same with the sound quality.  Overall they seem to do the job they set out to do, but nothing more.

We recommend you take a look at the Motorola S305 and the Jaybird Sportsband for some additional options.

Motorola S9-HD Bluetooth Sports HeadsetThe S9-HD  is one of Motorola’s first Bluetooth sports headphones.  In addition to functioning as amazing wireless sports headphones they also double as a Bluetooth phone headset if desired.

Pros

On Ear Music Controls.    If you check out some of the pictures below you’ll notice Motorola has made  it extremely easy to control your music by utilizing on ear music controls.

Style.  If you’re looking for a slick pair of workout headphones these definitely qualify.

Sound Quality.  The treble and bass sounds are pretty amazing for sports headphones.  These headphones definitely do sound right.

Cons

Versatility.  Because these are a one frame unit there isn’t a lot of room for adjustment.  The silicone earbuds are extremely comfortable, but once you have it in place that’s pretty much how it’s going to stay.

Track Skip + iPhone.  If you’re looking to hook these Bluetooth headphones up to your iPhone you may be better off the the Motorola S10-HD.  Why?  Well, unfortunately the s9-HD track skip feature doesn’t work with the iPhone because of an Apple update.

Sweat Resistant.  While these headphones may be slightly sweat resistant, they are not 100% sweat proof.  So if you sweat a lot you may end up shorting a circuit and damaging one of the earbuds.

One of the first things that caught our eye about the Motorola S9-HD Bluetooth Sports Headphones was the look.  As Motorola makes a push to become a leading manufacturer and designer of Bluetooth sports headphones they have always captured a very sleek and attractive design, something that can go a long way for those who want to do more with their headphones than just workout.

Motorola S9-HD

If you don’t want to miss a call during your workout these may be the perfect headphones for you.  They have an auto answer feature that allows you to answer calls instantly which will stop any music you’re currently listening to.  In addition you can call out using voice activated dialing, so you don’t even have to take your phone out of your pocket.

Overall these are a quality pair of Bluetooth sports headphones, though you may want to check out the Motorola S10-HD before purchasing, as they updated a lot of features.

Audio Bone 1.0 Waterproof HeadphonesIf you haven’t heard of bone conduction technology, just grab a pair of  Audio Bone AB10BL 1.0 Headphones and you’ll quickly find out just how cool it is.  These are a unique pair of sports headphones that produce sound in a very unique way.

Pros

Lightweight.  These headphones come in at just 1.3 ounces making them some of the lightest headphones we’ve seen.

Bone Conduction.  No worries about the earbuds falling out, as you never even put them in.

Waterproof.  Take a swim with these headphones.

Cons

Price.  They’re a lot more pricey than traditional headphones.

Sound Quality.  Unfortunately the sound quality is actually fairly poor.  Not only was sound quality low, but bass response was very insignificant.

Full Review

We absolutely love the idea of the Audio Bone AB10BL 1.0 Headphones, but the function of them still needs a bit of work.

These headphones are one of the few that utilize bone conduction to produce sound.  What is bone conduction?  Well unlike normal headphones that use an acoustic response, meaning they stimulate the inner ear by air conduction, these headphones don’t even go in your ears.  They use a neckband support system and wrap just over the ear.  As the sound resonates through the headphones your bones surrounding your ears conduct the sound based on vibrations.  Don’t worry, you don’t actually feel the vibrations because they are so subtle.  But your bones feel them and communicate with your inner ear and brain to produce high quality sound.

The potential of bone conduction technology is very high, but for such a high price these particular pair need a little bit of work in the sound department.  At the same time if you’re an avid runner who needs to always be aware of their surroundings then these may be a good fit for you, especially if you have some money burning a hole in your pocket.
